During this walking week you will discover the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park from three different accommodation locations. By starting from a different point each time, you gain insight into the variety of landscapes and the character of this unspoiled part of inland Andalusia.The area consists of a varied landscape characterized by the “dehesas”, a semi-open holm oak and cork oak woodland with grassland, where the famous Iberian pigs feed on acorns. You will also find centuries-old extensive chestnut forests here; these trees form an essential part of the protected natural area.

Day-by-day program (8 days)

Day 1 – Arrival in Alájar

Upon arrival in Alájar we will tell you everything about the walks and the surrounding area. Afterwards you can relax in your cottage,
or take a short walk, depending on your arrival time. In the evening we serve a welcome dinner.

Day 2 – Circular walk and lunch in Linares de la Sierra

Walk along rural paths, through forests to the nearby village of Linares. Upon arrival in Linares you will be welcomed by
Luismi & Adela at restaurant Arrieros (Bib Gourmand Michelin).

Distance: 12–13 km · Duration: 4–4.5 hours

Day 3 – The Hippy-Hike

Circular walk via the “hippie village” El Calabacíno, returning to Alájar via Castaño del Robledo.

Day 4 – On the way to the Mosque of Almonaster la Real

Linear route from Alájar to Almonaster la Real via rural paths, streams and forests. Discover old lime kilns, a tannery from 1806 and the Mosque of Almonaster.

Day 5 – Circular walk: Almonaster la Real

Circular walk through villages, along paths between olive trees and holm oaks, chapels and traditional fountains. Enjoy nature, historical heritage and panoramic views.

Day 6 – Linear walk from Almonaster la Real to Galaroza

Linear walk to the highest point of the Sierra de Aracena, Cerro San Cristóbal, through forests and authentic villages.

Day 7 – Circular walk Galaroza – Valdelarco – Galaroza

Circular walk to Valdelarco through forests, fields and valleys. In Valdelarco you will find quiet streets with traditional architecture.

About the accommodations

In Alájar you stay at Molino Rio Alajar with plenty of privacy and views of the valley and surrounding hills.
The price of the arrangement is based on a stay in Casa Buho. with a living-bedroom featuring a wood-burning stove, fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. Heating and air conditioning ensure year-round comfort.
In Almonaster la Real you stay in the recently renovated Hotel-Restaurant Garcia, a small cozy family-run hotel. From your room you have a beautiful view of the Mosque of Almonaster la Real, one of the most beautiful villages of the Sierra.
The final two nights you stay at the rustic rural Hotel-restaurant Los Doce Caños, with views of the mountains surrounding the village of Galaroza.


Breakfast, Dinner & Lunch

We provide a “well-stocked fridge”, so there is enough for breakfast, a packed lunch.
In Andalusia it is customary to enjoy a long lunch in the afternoon (from 14:00) at one of the many local restaurants. In the evening, only a limited number of restaurants are open (from 20:30). In Alájar, it is also possible to have a meal prepared and delivered to your Casa by our staff member Vanessa; if desired, she can also make a restaurant reservation.

About the activities

The walking routes in this program have been deliberately kept short, so you have plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings. If you would like to do longer hikes, route descriptions are available on site.


Extra days

You can indicate in advance when booking that you would like to stay somewhere longer. Add an extra day (rest day) at any time. In Alájar there are more walking routes, and both Almonaster and Galaroza are interesting villages where it is worth staying longer.
